How Therapy Works at Guide Behavioral Health
When a teen walks through our doors, we want them to feel seen, understood, and supported. That’s why we use evidence-based therapy methods, tailored to each teen’s needs and personality. Whether your teen is struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, or academic stress, the approaches we use are grounded in what actually works.
Our team of therapists is trained in a variety of treatment modalities, and we often blend them to create a plan that supports long-term healing. Here’s a closer look at the therapy methods we use—and why they matter.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is one of the most well-researched and effective treatments for teens struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, and more. It helps teens recognize how their thoughts affect their emotions and behaviors—and teaches them to challenge those patterns.
In practice, this means helping teens move from “I’m not good enough” to “I’m doing my best, and that’s okay,” and from “Something bad is going to happen” to “I can handle uncertainty.”
CBT is a cornerstone of our treatment approach and is integrated into both our individual and group therapy work. Learn more about how CBT helps on our anxiety and depression pages.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is a highly effective therapy for teens dealing with OCD, phobias, and certain anxiety disorders. It involves helping teens gradually face their fears—in small, manageable steps—without engaging in compulsive or avoidant behaviors.
Over time, ERP builds confidence and rewires the brain’s fear responses. Teens learn they can feel discomfort and still be okay. It’s tough work, but with the right support, the transformation is remarkable. If your teen is struggling with OCD, ERP is a game-changer. Learn more on our OCD treatment page.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Originally developed for emotion regulation, DBT is incredibly helpful for teens who feel overwhelmed by intense emotions, self-harm urges, or relationship challenges.
In our DBT-informed groups and sessions, teens learn how to:
Stay grounded during emotional storms
Communicate more effectively
Cope with stress without lashing out or shutting down
DBT can be especially useful for teens struggling with self-harm, suicidal ideation, and social anxiety. Explore how we use DBT on our self-harm and suicidal ideation pages.
TEAM-CBT
TEAM-CBT is a modern evolution of traditional cognitive behavioral therapy, developed by Dr. David Burns—one of our medical director’s mentors. TEAM stands for Testing, Empathy, Agenda Setting, and Methods.
This approach ensures that teens are not only receiving effective tools but are also:
Actively involved in their therapy goals
Feeling validated and supported
Being tracked for progress in measurable ways
We use TEAM-CBT to deepen engagement and make therapy more collaborative and effective.
Mindfulness & Acceptance-Based Approaches
Sometimes the most powerful thing a teen can do is sit with a tough emotion and breathe through it. That’s the heart of mindfulness-based interventions and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
In these sessions, teens learn to:
Observe their thoughts without judgment
Build tolerance for discomfort
Shift their focus from control to meaningful action
These approaches are especially helpful for teens dealing with perfectionism, academic stress, and anxiety.
How These Therapies Fit into Our Programs
At Guide Behavioral Health, therapy methods aren’t one-size-fits-all. We integrate these approaches into our different levels of care, depending on your teen’s needs:
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Structured after-school support (3–4 days per week)
Individual and group therapy incorporating CBT, DBT, and mindfulness
Ideal for teens balancing mental health care and school
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Full-day therapeutic care (Monday–Friday)
Daily exposure therapy, skills training, and deeper clinical support
Ideal for teens needing more intensive stabilization
We also offer flexible after-school interventions for teens who need less frequent support. Visit our treatment options page to see what level of care might be right for your family.

FAQ: Answers to Common Questions About CBT and Teen Therapy Methods
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps teens understand how their thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected. It teaches them to identify unhelpful patterns—like catastrophizing or negative self-talk—and shift those patterns in healthier directions. CBT is highly effective for anxiety, depression, OCD, and academic stress. You can learn more about how we use CBT across conditions on our anxiety, OCD, and depression pages.
-
No. While CBT is a cornerstone of our care, we also use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), TEAM-CBT, and mindfulness-based approaches. We tailor each teen’s treatment plan based on their needs, diagnosis, and goals. Visit our treatment options page to explore how these therapies are integrated into our IOP and PHP programs.
-
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard for treating OCD. It helps teens gradually face fears or triggers without giving in to compulsions. Over time, this reduces the power of anxiety and builds confidence. If your teen is struggling with OCD, visit our OCD treatment page to learn how ERP works in practice.
-
DBT, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy, focuses more on emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills. It’s often used for teens dealing with intense emotions, self-harm, or social struggles. CBT works more on changing thought patterns, while DBT helps teens ride out emotional waves with new coping skills. DBT is a big part of our approach on our self-harm and suicidal ideation pages.
-
Yes. Mindfulness doesn’t require a teen to sit cross-legged or chant mantras. We teach real-world mindfulness practices like grounding techniques, body scans, and breathing exercises. These tools help teens reduce reactivity and tolerate discomfort—skills that benefit them long after therapy ends. Mindfulness plays an important role in our academic stress and perfectionism treatment.
-
Absolutely. Our therapists draw from CBT, DBT, ERP, mindfulness, and TEAM-CBT across both levels of care. In IOP, teens typically receive individual and group sessions after school. In PHP, the support is more intensive, with full-day care. We also offer flexible after-school interventions. Learn more about our treatment programs on the IOP and PHP pages.
