Finding the Right Level of Care for Your Teen
If your teen is struggling, one of the hardest parts is knowing what kind of help they actually need.
Some teens need a little more support during a difficult season. Others need more structure to stabilize and start feeling like themselves again.
At Guide Behavioral Health, we provide outpatient teen mental health treatment in Menlo Park, serving families across Palo Alto and San Mateo County. Our programs are designed to support teens while allowing them to stay connected to school, home, and daily life.
We’ll help you understand your options and choose a level of care that fits your teen right now — and adjust as their needs change.
Understanding Your Teen’s Treatment Options
Terms like “IOP” and “PHP” can feel confusing — and honestly, they don’t do a great job of describing what care actually looks like.
Here’s a simpler way to think about it:
Some teens need after-school support
Some teens need daytime, more structured care
We offer both — and we’ll help you figure out which makes sense.
After-School Support (IOP)
Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured, after-school mental health support for teens who need more than weekly therapy but can continue attending school.
Teens attend sessions Monday through Thursday from 4:00–7:00 PM and return home each evening.
This program helps teens:
build coping skills
regulate emotions
manage stress and school pressure
improve relationships

Flexible After-School Option (Flex IOP)
For families who need more flexibility, we offer Flex IOP.
Teens attend any two afternoons per week while receiving the same evidence-based care, family involvement, and peer support.
This is a good option for teens balancing school, sports, or other commitments while still needing structured support.
Daytime Structured Support (PHP)
Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides a higher level of care for teens who need more consistent support.
This is a daytime program, meeting Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM–3:00 PM.
Teens receive:
individual therapy
group therapy
skills-based support
family involvement
They return home each evening, making this a strong alternative to inpatient or residential treatment.

Which Program Is Right for Your Teen?
The right level of care depends on what your teen is experiencing right now.
In general:
IOP works well for teens who need more support but can stay in school
PHP is often helpful when symptoms feel more overwhelming or harder to manage
If you’re unsure, that’s completely normal. Most families don’t know the difference when they first reach out — and you don’t need to.
We’ll walk you through it.

Questions Parents Ask About Teen Mental Health Treatment
-
Most parents aren’t sure at first — and that’s completely normal. The right level of care depends on how your teen is functioning day to day, how intense their symptoms feel, and how much support they need to stabilize. We help you figure this out step by step.
-
IOP is an after-school program that allows teens to continue attending school during the day, while PHP is a daytime program that provides more structured support. Both offer therapy and skill-building, but PHP is typically used when a higher level of care is needed.
-
Yes. Many teens continue attending school while participating in our after-school program (IOP). If your teen needs more support, our daytime program (PHP) can provide stabilization before transitioning back to a school routine.
-
Treatment length varies depending on your teen’s needs. Some teens benefit from a few weeks of structured support, while others may need more time to build stability and confidence. We regularly reassess and adjust the plan as your teen progresses.
-
We use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based techniques to help teens regulate emotions, manage stress, and improve daily functioning.
-
Many teens step down to a lower level of care, such as transitioning from PHP to IOP, or from IOP to weekly therapy. The goal is to build lasting skills and create a sustainable path forward.
