After-School Mental Health Support for Teens in Palo Alto
When a teen is struggling, many families reach a point where once-a-week therapy no longer feels like enough — but pulling them out of school or daily life doesn’t feel right either.
Guide Behavioral Health’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured, after-school mental health support for teens in Palo Alto. Located just minutes away in Menlo Park, our program helps teens build coping skills, regain stability, and move forward — while continuing to attend school and live at home.
A Structured After-School Program That Fits Real Life
Our IOP is designed to support teens without disrupting their daily routine.
Teens attend sessions after school, where they receive consistent support in a safe, structured environment. This allows them to stay connected to their academics, friendships, and home life while getting the help they need.
For many families, this balance is what makes IOP feel manageable — and effective.
What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured mental health program that provides more support than weekly therapy, without requiring full-day or residential care.
Teens participate in multiple therapy sessions each week, helping them build skills more quickly and make meaningful progress.
If your teen needs more support than weekly therapy — but does not need daytime care — IOP is often the right next step.
When Is IOP the Right Fit?
IOP may be a good fit if your teen:
Is struggling with anxiety, depression, or emotional stress
Feels overwhelmed by school or social pressures
Is withdrawing, shutting down, or having difficulty coping
Needs more support than weekly therapy provides
Would benefit from structured, consistent after-school care
If your teen is experiencing more severe or escalating symptoms, you may want to explore a higher level of care such as our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).
What Teens Experience in Our IOP Program
Our program is designed to feel supportive, engaging, and collaborative — not clinical or overwhelming.
Teens participate in a combination of:
Individual therapy
Group therapy
Family involvement
Skills-based sessions
We use evidence-based approaches such as CBT and DBT to help teens:
Manage emotions more effectively
Build healthy coping strategies
Improve communication
Strengthen confidence and resilience
The goal is not just short-term relief, but helping teens develop tools they can carry forward into everyday life.
Program Schedule and Structure
Our after-school IOP runs:
Monday through Thursday
4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Most teens in our Palo Alto IOP participate for approximately 8–10 weeks. This timeframe allows teens to build meaningful coping skills, improve emotional stability, and create lasting change, while our team continues to monitor progress and adjust care as needed.
Flex IOP: Built for Busy Schedules
We understand that teens and families are balancing school, activities, and other commitments.
Our Flex IOP allows teens to attend any two days per week, while still receiving the same high-quality care, family involvement, and therapeutic support.
This option works well for teens who need support but cannot commit to a full schedule.

Helping Your Teen Build Real, Lasting Change
Structured programs that combine individual, group, and family therapy can significantly improve outcomes for teens facing emotional and behavioral challenges.
IOP allows teens to practice new skills in real-life situations — while staying connected to school and family — which often leads to more lasting progress.
Let’s Find the Right Support for Your Teen
